Sports Teams

 

American Football

The University of Lincoln Colonials were formed in 2005 and play in the BUAFL University leagues. As such, the team line-up regularly against University sides from across the country in this high octane contact sport which is not for the faint hearted. The Recent 2009-2010 season was a tough but also successful season. The team compete their home games away from campus at the local RAF Base Crampton. The club is also a vital sport involved in the Varsity against Derby. They look for people who are dedicated, want to have fun and also get involved in a huge social side too.

 

 

  

 

Training Times: Tuesday Nights: 8pm till 9:45pm On the Astro Turf (Sports centre)

                              Other Training Is based on the west common and other locations.

 

Badminton (Men’s and Women’s)

The Sports and societies office boasts both men’s and women’s competitive Badminton teams which each play in the BUCS leagues. The Badminton team have two strong men's teams and one womens. Their recent season saw some mid table finishes and they are looking for members to now take them up to the top leagues. Badminton are ntegral part of the students union as they play competitively but they are a team that welcome players who are both keen to compete and those who just want to play socially.

Basketball (Men’s)

The men’s basketball team has been one of the University of Lincoln’s most successful sides over recent years. As well as competing in the BUCS university leagues the team also enters county competitions and has lifted the county cup on a number of occasions in recent years. As effective off the court as they are on it, the team boast a lively social side too and are always at the centre of campus action. They are a key team in both the varsity and Sports tours. This team has quality coaching and is definately worth a look. The most recent season of 2010 saw the mens basketball face some hard competition and are really needing new members to help the team through to huge success.

 

Basketball (Women’s)

The Womens Basktball team is a well established, well coached and organised team. It works with the Men's basketball team to increase the profile of basketball within the university. Again the team competes in BUCS and had a good 2009/10 season. Its highlight was the huge win at local varsity rivals Derby. It is part of a great social scene and offers a perfect way to sample what being part of a club or society is all about. The women’s side welcome seasoned players as well as those that want to give basketball a go.

Canoe and Kayak

The Canoe and Kayak Club at the University of Lincoln is a great, fun filled and exciting club that is now one of the core teams within the sports and societies office. The team  going on regular excursions across the region and especially like being involved in Tyne tour and Newquay. The club has progressed massively within the 2009-10 season. It had its biggest membership numbers and is now looking to be more involved in canoe and kayak polo competitions. The club boasts an active social side and and train within a minute walking distance on the Brayford Pool area.

 

Training: Brayford pool, Lincoln Canoe Club (next to the Main Building) Wednesday afternoons and various other days during the week.

 

 

 

Climbing

A New club to sports and societies which has just been formed within the SU. The club will be looking to gain members at freshers fayre and any age, experience can join. The club is looking to compete both recreationally and in competition. But also cater for those wanted to do this sport socially. It is a fun adventourous activity and will be based at Sheffield climbing centre. This is one club not to miss out on.

 

Training: will be announced in September at the Freshers Fayre 2010

Cricket- Mens and women's

The Cricket Club is in its 3rd season this year.  Following a successful two seasons the team has expanded and now has two mens competing teams. The team does not compete on campus but is an essential part of BUCS fixtures played on a wednesday in the summer season. The team trains regularly through out the winter, taking part in some indoor cricket and tournaments in the off season. They are a varsity sport too. The girls cricket team has just been established this year and are looking for new members. Go along and see if this sport is for you.

Equestrian

The University of Lincoln Equestrian Team consists of 3 teams who compete in BUCS competitions. Training happens around twice a week with both flatwork and showjumping lessons. The BUCS competitions are run slightly differently to any normal event, a dressage test followed by a round of showjumping marked on style. A competent, confident and competitive rider is required to be on the team and trials take place early on in the term so put your name down at the freshers fayre if you want to take part!

Football (Men’s)

The football club is one of the oldest clubs here at the University of Lincoln. The club has four teams, which each of them play within the BUCS leagues on Wednesday afternoons. They are a vital part of the sports and societies office and most of the teams are highly ranked within the BUCS leagues playing against the best universities in the country. The men's 1st team is aiming to get back in the Premiership this year and will be looking for the best players to help them do this.  As well as regular post-match nights out the club hosts a number of social events throughout the year. This club does hold trials to become part of the team which are usually held on the west common during freshers week. To become part of the trials make sure you attend the sports and socieite fayre within fresher’s week and go find the football stand so you have guaranteed that you have put your name down.

Football (Women’s)

The University of Lincoln Women’s Football Club are the Team of the year for 2010. The team  plays on a Wednesday afternoon within the BUCS leagues, competing against other universities from across the Midlands. Last season they finished runners up in the league missing out by 2 points to become champions and promotion into the top league. They however did compete in the BUCS conference final cup competition and were winners making them BUCS cup champions. Although a competitive club, the women’s team are welcoming to any girls who want to have a kick-about, even if you have never played before. So long as you are up for having a laugh and meeting new people you’re welcome to come and join in.

 

Training: Monday, Astro turf and back pitches (University Of Lincoln Sports Centre) 4:30pm-7pm 

Futsal

Futsal is a version of five a side football originating in South America. Usually played indoors it uses a smaller heavier ball than normal football. The University of Lincoln Futsal Society was set up in 2006. Last season they continued there previous years of good results and with this qualified  through to the national finals of the University Futsal Championships in Sheffield. This year the club hopes to get even more people involved, so if you want to meet new people, hone your football skills or just have fun, Futsal could be the way forward. It is a great club not to be missed out on.

Gaelic Football

A traditional Irish sport, Gaelic Football is perhaps best described as a cross between football and rugby. Played by a fifteen man team it is a fast and physical sport and great fun too. The University of Lincoln Gaelic Football Club was formed in 2006 and reached the quarter finals of the National Championships in their first season. If you want to get involved, don't worry, experience isn't necessary. Just come down, give it a go and you won't regret it. The team trains and competes in the Gaelic football university leagues. So its definately worth the experience.

Golf

The University of Lincoln Golf team has been one of the institutions most successful sides in recent years with the first team competing in the very top division of University golf for the fifth successive year. The premieship. The recent 2010 season saw some huge achievements. The golf men's 1st stayed within the premiership league and also qualified through to the quarter final of the BUCS cup playing away at St Andrews. The 1st team also aquired some top players, Whom competed in the Individual BUCS championships qualifying and finishing 17th and 27th in the country. They also hold a British competing/ British university player.  The golf 4th team also won their league this season and were promoted. This success has meant that the men’s first team will be competing and training at Woodhall spa, the UK’s national golf centre. Golf is the only official mixed sport in the University programme with men and women competing side by side. As such the club is open to both male and female players who are keen to develop their game and enjoy the nineteenth hole as much as the previous eighteen.

Handball

Last year saw the emergence of handball adding yet more variance in the activities you can get involved with. Not a traditional English sport it gives you a chance to give something completely new to give it a go. They are a very friendly club and welcome all who want to be involved within this fantastic sport. The club had a brilliant season in 2009-2010. With many wins including some of the team representing great britain within the sport of Handball. Definatley worth a try.

Hockey (Men’s and Women’s)

The men’s and women’s Hockey Club are run collectively helping to create a very social and friendly atmosphere amongst all of the players. With six teams in total (3 Men, 3 Women) the club is one of the largest at the University of Lincoln and has a very active social scene. Each team competes in the BUCS leagues on Wednesday at varying levels. The club train on Mondays and are open to anyone wishing to continue developing their skills, or those interested in trying the sport for the first time all are welcome to come along. The club also has very strong links with Lincoln Roses Hockey Club (www.roses-hockey.com) enabling members to gain quality coaching and also play in higher level weekend leagues.

Inline Hockey

The Inline Hockey Team is looking to enter to University Hockey League and are looking for players to help this happen. Whether experience or novice feel free to come and long and give it a try. They train regularly and have a great social scene. 

Karate

The Karate Club is one of the student Union’s longer running groups and has been a feature at the University for over six years. The club trains regularly enabling members to develop their skills with the supervision and guidance of expert coaches. The club welcome both male and female members of all abilities, with the more established competitors given the opportunity to compete in University BUCS competitions.

                  Wednesday, Engine shed, 5:30pm-7:30pm.

 

 

Lacrosse

 

Lacrosse is a new sport within the university. A active but fun and competitive team who are looking to be a very successful sports team in the future years at Lincoln university. This Team will be entering a Mens team into the BUCS Leagues this year. However it does also have a devloping womens squad as well who are really wanting to do the same. This year the team recieved Best new Team of the year 2010 for their efforts and great development both competively, recreationally and socially. Lacrosse is definately a good club to think about joining.

Netball

The Netball Club is one of the most popular groups within the student union with two active teams regularly taking on other institutions in both the BUCS league fixtures and friendly competition. As well as competing and training regularly on the court the club have a very active and spirited social side off it. The clubs host regularly social nights allowing you to get to know your team-mates informally, with fancy dress likely to be a factor more than once during the season. The girls do hold trials so make sure you sign up during sports and societies freshers fayre.

Parkour 

A newly established club for 2010. Parkour is a safe athletic discipline, in which practitioners traverse any environment in the most efficient way possible using their physical abilities. It is great Fun and looking for new members. Make sure you look out for them at freshers week.

 

Rugby League

The Rugby League team is an excellent club to join on campus. They have just completed a very tough season. The team competes in the BUCS Rugby League on Wednesdays playing their home games away from the university at Newark rowing club. They train up to three times a week and have an excellent coaching background. The club is not just about the Rugby, the club values socialising and team bonding just as highly as the game itself and holds regular social nights and events. The team is always looking for new members and is open to all, whether it’s for the rugby or the socials.

Rugby Union (Men’s)

One of the most prominent on campus, the Men's Rugby Union Club has enjoyed success both on and off field. The guys combine a professional attitude with a spectacular social streak, meaning that whether you are an international or novice, all levels of ability and commitment are welcomed, right down to the Rugby Appreciation Society! The guys had a great 2009-10 season with two second league position finishes. Just missing out on Promotion. They also hold a rugby auction each year which won event of the year for the second year running.

Rugby Union (Women’s)

The University of Lincoln ladies rugby team are a dedicated group of students who love the sport and have put a lot of time and effort to establish their club. They are a lively bunch of girls always looking to have a good time, on and off the pitch. If you’re intimidated by the contact aspect of the sport, don’t be, as there are many levels of ability on the team and ultimately they are just looking to have fun.

Rowing

 

The University of Lincoln Rowing Club was established in 2005, for recreational and competitive rowers. The club enjoys joint affiliation with the local rowing club of Lincoln Rowing Centre where they share joint boat house facilities.  Its current members range from Novice to Intermediate 3, 2 and 1 rowers. Each year trials are held and the club takes on the members they feel will bring the best to the clubs success. If you are committed, enthusiastic, hard-working, but most importantly able to have fun and want to learn to row, then you should think about joining the University ofLincoln Rowing Club.

Shotokan Karate

This club practices Shotokan Karate, the most popular style of karate in the world, and is affiliated to the Japan Karate Association. The club has been active for the last few years and has attracted a wide range of members. The club has had a great deal of success in the last couple of years including Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the National Championships and a number of other competitions. The club also received 3 nominations at the 2010 Sports and Societies for Sports Woman, Team and Coach of the Year, and deservedly won the Sports Woman of the Year award. The club website is

Snow Sports

LUSST, LincolnUniversity’s Snow Sports Team has been an active part of the Athletic Union for a number of years. The club boasts a large social network and hosts regular events and get-togethers for its members. LUSST can also be found ‘on the Piste’ on a regular basis, making regular excursions to the Xscape Centre in Castleford.

  

 

Training:  XSCAPE, Doncaster- Wednesday Afternoons and other days during the week.

Squash

The Squash club provides an opportunity for players of all abilities to learn and practice squash. The squad ranges in standards from beginner to experienced, with plenty of opportunity for coaching. The team is also split into competitive and non-competitive groups allowing players to play for fun, or play to represent the University in the BUCS fixtures. This year saw a great season of squash with the university finishing high in their respective leagues.

Surfing

The Surfing Society was founded four years ago and offers the perfect escape from your day-to-day university life. The Society makes regular trips to CaytonBay near Scarborough for both newcomers and the more established surfers. Away from the waves the society is just as active, offering camping weekends and other social events not to mention its own range of society merchandise. The Society has an action packed minisite on lincolnsu.com which has won awards.

Tennis

The University of Lincoln’s tennis side plays within the BUCS leagues. The club have both male and female teams and welcome players whether they are novices, experienced or somewhere in between. Its great fun and a brilliant chance for you to play one of Britain’s favourite pastimes. The club perform and train at East gate tennis club at the top of the hill next to the cathedral. They are a brillitant funfilled and social club too.

Triathlon

A very new club which is looking for a new president to take over for the coming year.

Ultimate Frisbee

This club has been formed for 3 years. The sport is something that most people have never even heard of however it is huge within university sports. Boasting over 40 members and a male, females and mixed team it is a club that caters for everyone. They compete regularly at competitions all over the country and train weekly. They hold their own yearly tournament too based at the university sports centre. They were so successful last year that they went on to gain Sports coach of the year at the sports and societies awards.. The team is a great asset to the university with some of its players being involved in GB trials and also representing them.  This club is worth a look if you want to experience a high quality student experience.

Volleyball (men’s and women’s)

The University of Lincoln Volleyball Club was formed four years ago, but has gone from strength to strength in that time. The club enter men’s and women’s teams in the University BUCS leagues and play against a variety of other universities. With both the men’s and women’s teams the club welcomes members of either sex and of any ability. With an active all round social side the society has been a big favourite amongst the university’s international students.
