Academic appeals…? Here’s what to do…
Useful documents: will be uploaded as soon as the 2009/10 guidelines/forms are available.
Kayleigh can help you with the appeals process if you decide to request a review of your assessment marks. Appeals can be made on grounds of extenuating circumstances that couldn’t be made known before the assessment took place, a procedural irregularity in the assessment, evidence of prejudice/bias in marking or an error in calculating or recording marks.
The first thing to make clear is that you can’t request a review of your grade on the basis that retrospectively you don’t think the standard of teaching was appropriate, you don’t agree with the mark given (ie you think you should have been given a higher mark) or disagreement with the academic judgement of the internal/external examiners.
The first stage of the process is to complete a Review Request form which goes to Academic Registry. This basically means that the Board of Examiners will look at the process and grades again and decide whether to change their decision. You must complete and hand this form back within TEN DAYS of receiving your assessment results.
The second stage is when the results of the Review investigation come back and if you still aren’t happy with the decision you can then complete an Appeal Request form to ask an independent board of examiners to review your assessment results. You should get this form back with the results of the review.
The form should again be returned within 10 days of receiving the outcome of the review. This will then be looked at by the Vice Chancellor or a nominee appointed by the Vice Chancellor and a decision will be made as to whether to proceed to an Appeal Board.
If it goes to Appeal Board you can then present evidence and make a statement as to why you believe there have been inaccuracies in your marking procedure or an issue with the assessment. The Appeal Board will be independent and have nothing to do with your course or Faculty. The outcome of the Appeal Board will be announced at the close of the hearing.
If you have any more questions about any issues with the academic appeals process then please don’t hesitate to contact someone in Academic Registry (Cheryl Cox or Lisa Baker) or Kayleigh in the Students’ Union.
