    What can you do?

For information on general recycling in the community visit the City of Lincoln Council's website

    Switch it off

Switching off various electrical equipment will not only save you money, but also help the environment.  You've probably all seen the adverts about switching your telly off rather than leaving it on standby.  Well it's true, it could save you alot of money on electricity bills but also reduce your impact on the environment.

Recycle old mobile phones and printer cartridges

Got an old mobile phone lying around? Printer cartridge run out?  Well...To assist students reduce their impact on the environment, you can now drop off used and unwanted mobile phones and printer cartridges at the SOAP Centre for recycling.

We then send your old mobile phones and printer cartridges to "Recycle 4 Charity" and the proceeds go to Lincoln Mind

    Top 10 Tips for Students

    1) - Turn lights off when you leave a room - This could save up to 25kg of CO2  each year, per room!

    2) - Turn off your chargers - leaving a mobile phone charger plugged in all the time equates to the same amount of CO2 emmissions as driving a car for 130 miles.

    3) - Only put the amount of water you need in the kettle - If 1 million people did this, it would save the same as taking 20,000 cars off the road.

    4) - Buy local fresh food - frozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce than fresh.

    5) - Report any dripping taps - A dripping tap can use upto 140 litres of water each week.  The same as 4 showers.

    6) - Take a shower rather than a bath - A 5 minute shower uses 35 litres of water compared to a bath which uses 80

    7) - Reuse your carrier bag - The average person uses 9 plastic carrier bags per year.  The materials used to make these, take 500 years to degrade in a landfill site.

    8) - Use public transport - Parking is bad enough in Lincoln, but if you have to travel to Uni use public transport where possible, you'll be doing your bit for the environment too.

     9) - Shut windows & doors - Keeping these closed when the heating is on could save a small fortune.  If you're too hot, turn the radiator down.

    10) - Pass it on! - Tell your friends about this and together we can do our bit for the environment.
